After two major overhauls in three years, Diablo 4 is preparing for yet another round of updates. In the upcoming season, Blizzard will rework monster behavior and the itemization system, with even more significant changes planned for the next expansion.
In an interview with streamer Raxxanterax, associate game director Zaven Haroutunian explained that the team doesn’t want to “constantly tear down and rebuild” the game just for the sake of it.
We’re not trying to change everything just because we can. We look at the game as a whole and decide what isn’t working — what doesn’t contribute to a positive player experience.
According to Haroutunian, certain elements — like monster types — haven’t been updated since launch and have started to “feel old and neglected.” This became especially apparent during the creation of the new leaderboard dungeon, The Tower, where players compete for the fastest clear times.
Supporting a system that nobody cares about is a tax on the team. Either it serves its purpose, or it needs to go. The worst option is to just leave it untouched.
Haroutunian emphasized that Blizzard’s goal isn’t to endlessly pile on new content, but to refresh older mechanics so that nothing in Diablo 4 feels abandoned. The team aims for natural evolution — expanding the game while keeping its foundation stable.
Blizzard plans to reveal details about the next major update and the upcoming expansion by the end of 2025.
Meanwhile, critics’ reviews for ARC Raiders are in — with scores rivaling this year’s biggest hits like Hollow Knight: Silksong and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, it’s already being hailed as the new benchmark for extraction shooters.
