It’s been over a decade since Sleeping Dogs first released, but the dream of a film adaptation is still alive. Back in 2017, Donnie Yen (Rogue One) attempted to launch a live-action version of the game — but the project quietly fell apart.

Now Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu has decided to bring Sleeping Dogs back to life. And it seems things are finally moving forward: Liu announced that the first draft of the movie’s script has been completed.

According to Liu, the script has already been sent for review, but it remains unclear who exactly is writing and directing the project — the author’s name was blurred out in the shared image. The actor also noted that while Square Enix has been supportive, “studios that don’t seem to understand how important this IP is.”

If the script is approved, the project will move on to the next stage — casting and pre-production. However, the movie’s future largely depends on whether a studio steps in to fund the adaptation.

Sleeping Dogs remains one of the most beloved open-world games in the GTA-like genre, and perhaps in the coming years it will finally receive a worthy big-screen adaptation.
