At the very end of the opening ceremony of gamescom 2025, a trailer was shown Black Myth: Zhong Kui. We are talking about an indirect sequel Black Myth: Wukong, in which we will play as a different character. In this article, we have collected all the information about the future project that is currently available.

The original Black Myth was released in 2024. It is based on the Chinese classic novel "Journey to the West", and the protagonist of the game resembles Sun Wukong, the main character of this book. In terms of gameplay, we have a high-quality soulslike with an interesting combat system and the ability to transform into various animals, like in the Gothic trilogy.

At the time of writing, Wukong has sold over 25 million copies. The average press score was 81 out of 100. The developers hint that the story of the first Black Myth is not over yet. Perhaps we can expect story additions, rumors of which have been circulating for a long time.

The demon lord Zhong Kui will act as the protagonist of the new game. However, he is considered a positive character, because the hero fights demons and administers justice to the dead. In ancient China, his image hung near the doors of many houses. It was believed that such paintings protect residents from evil spirits.

Zhong Kui was often depicted as a large man with a fierce face and a thick beard. He is usually dressed as an official and holds a long sword in his right hand. The warrior can travel between the world of the living and the realm of the dead. It is highly likely that something similar will be in the game. This was hinted at by Geoff Keighley, host of gamescom Opening Night Live 2025.

The change of the main character is due to the fact that the developers from Game Science want to introduce a number of fresh ideas into the original concept of Black Myth and show the already familiar world from a different side. According to the developers, Zhong Kui is noticeably different from the protagonist of the first part. We are in for a completely new story, nothing is known about the connection with the events of Wukong yet.

Like the first part, Zhong Kui will be a hardcore action RPG in the spirit of the Dark Souls series. However, there is an important difference from Dark Souls — the game is single-player, so you will not be able to call a friend to help you defeat the next boss.
