A card strategy game about misfortune, in which players shape the fates of eccentric families and try to bring them to tragic ends. In Gloom, players take turns playing events and mishaps: unhappy occurrences lower the self-worth of their own family members, while happy occasions raise that of their rivals’ characters. The aim is to make one’s own family as miserable as possible and the others as happy as possible.
Event cards can alter characters’ fates, allowing players to draw cards or discard the top modifier card on a character. Untimely Death cards remove characters from play; when the last member of any family dies, the game ends. The player with the lowest Family Value wins.
