Sony'nin üçüncü oyun platformu (PSP hariç), 7. nesil oyun sistemlerine ait olup, şu anda Windows PC ve Microsoft Xbox 360 ile birlikte "üç büyük" üst düzey platformdan biridir. PlayStation 3'ün satışları Ocak 2013 itibarıyla dünya genelinde 77 milyondan fazla adede ulaştı. Tarihteki en "kapalı" donanım platformu olarak bilinir; tam olarak kırılması 4 yıl sürdü. Dört farklı varyasyonda mevcuttur (Premium, Core, Slim, Super Slim). PlayStation 3 için oyun derecelendirmeleri, konsolun günümüzde hala iyi bir talep gördüğünü göstermektedir. PlayStation 3 için en iyi oyun Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 oldu. Konsolun halefinin PlayStation 4 olması bekleniyor.
